A care home does not run without its domestic team, and anyone who has worked in one will tell you the same. Clean, safe surroundings are part of the care, not separate from it.

What does it entail?

Cleaning residents' bedrooms, bathrooms, lounges and dining areas to a proper standard. Infection control cleaning and following the service's schedules. Laundry, bedding changes and keeping supplies stocked. Working safely with cleaning chemicals under COSHH, which we train you on.

Is this for me?

If you are thorough, reliable and don't mind a chat, yes. You will be working around residents all day, and for some of them you will be one of the few people they see that morning. The ones who do this job well are the ones who say hello properly and remember what someone told them yesterday.

The hours suit people who need to work around school runs or other commitments. It is honest, visible work and the difference you make is obvious the moment you walk into a room you have just done.

What do you need to work as a domestic with Tezlom?

• Enhanced DBS, either processed with Tezlom or on the Update Service — required for everyone working in a care setting
• A minimum of 2 satisfactory references
• Right to work in the UK
• Free mandatory training, including infection control and COSHH, provided by us

No previous care home experience needed. If you can clean properly and turn up when you say you will, your local branch wants to hear from you.

Domestic & Housekeeping FAQs

Do I need experience to be a domestic in a care home?

No. If you are thorough, reliable and happy around people, we can place you. Plenty of our domestics came from cleaning offices, hotels or schools and prefer this because you get to know everybody.

Why do I need a DBS check just to clean?

Because you are working in someone's home, around vulnerable people, often on your own. Everyone who sets foot in a care service needs an Enhanced DBS, whatever the job title. It is not a reflection on you.

What does the job actually involve?

Cleaning residents' rooms and communal areas, bathrooms and kitchens, infection control cleaning, laundry, bed changes, and keeping stock topped up. Some services split domestic and laundry roles; others combine them.

What are the hours?

Usually daytime, often mornings. Many of our domestics work school hours. Tell your branch what you need and they will look for shifts that fit.

Is it just cleaning?

Officially yes, and you are not expected to give personal care. In practice you become one of the familiar faces residents look forward to seeing, and that part of it matters more than people expect.

How quickly can I start?

Once your DBS and references are through. Your branch will keep you posted and chase the slow parts for you.
